cat chasing chickens
« on: March 21, 2011, 16:03 »
The problem i have is that i have two pet cats and four pet chickens. The chicken live most of the time in a run at the end of the garden and there are no problems. However i like to let them out to roam the entire garden when i am around during the day. One of my cats is fine with the chickens and doesnt bother them at all. However the other one will stalk the small black tails and chase them (yet leaves the buff orpigntons alone), so i always have to run interference and eventually lock him in the house whilst the chickens are in the garden.

Is there any way to train him not to chase the chickens besides telling him off and carrying him back to the house?

A squirt from a water pistol normally works after a time or two :) (or getting pecked by a chicken)

i would live it one of the chickens will tell it off with a swift peck and a wing flap i have a Maine coon kitten almost a year old who likes to play with them and a poland puts her in her place with a peck and a wing flap. but if you are really unsure use a water hose, water gun or a spry bottle it will work.

i will try the water pistol approach i think. I dont think the chook would stand much of a chance as he isnt trying to play with it, he is definitly out to catch and eat it. He drags in enough other wildlife on a regular basis to know that he is a reasonable hunter.
