A rain free month?
« on: March 20, 2011, 07:14 »
Is this possible in March?

I know other regions have had it, but here in the East Midlands we've had no rain during this month. The local weather station has recorded a total of 0.06mm, but that was on a very misty day when it was more like condensation than rain fall.

Looking at the 16 day weather forecast, there's none forecast until 2nd April.

I can't really complain as the ground is perfect for prepping and planting what should be going in, how long before we cry "drought!"?

Perhaps it's going to plan this year, soil to a fine tilth in March, sow in April, April showers?

Naw. Won't happen.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm sure there's a rain free day forecast up here but surely thats complete rubbish!

Whilst driving up through Oxfordshire on friday we had copious amounts of rain.

As usual when driving up the M40 if the weather is going to change, it does at the Stokenchurch cut. It rained almost 'til we got the Banbury junction.

On checking our new water butts on our return they had both collected quite a bit off the summerhouse roof.

All our plant containers are quite dry again now though.
Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

We've had 29.1 mm so far this month, however whilst it is raining right now the gauge, software of some combination of, doesn't seem to think we've had any today. ::)

Take that back, it obviously hadn't been raining as long as I thought it had. The gauge will only register after 0.3 mm, which it has now done. :)

Before dismissing it as rubbish, perhaps you'd better learn how to quote properly!

Fact 1 - stats re rainfall as posted.

Fact 2 - 16 forecast as posted.

Now - which bit is rubbish?

No such luck here, it rained enough Friday morning for machines and drivers to be rained off lunchtime. (Got paid the full shift though  :D )

DD,
obviously the stats re actual rainfall that has taken place in your area are not rubbish, they are factual.

The 16 day forecast though is a factual prediction, but we all know how often weather predictions go awry.

I don't think your statement was being 'rubbished', just the forecast.
Perhaps nickmcmechan has considerably less faith in the weather forecasters.

With two thirds of March gone though they may well be proved right in your area

8mm (1/3rd inch) so far in March in this part of Sheffield; very little of the top-dressings of fertilisers I sprinkled around in strategic places a few weeks ago has even begun to be washed into the soil.

Could be in for a repeat of last year (if I remember correctly) when I had the hose out several times in April.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Wrong! That such a prediction has been made is a fact. Whether that prediction turns out to be correct is another matter  :tongue2:
