Which Onion?
« on: March 17, 2011, 10:47 »
Whilst browsing in Wilkos yesterday I noticed they are selling 3 types of white onion...

Turbo
Sturon &
Stuttgarter.

However there was no descriptions for the onions and I can't find many comparisons anywhere online.

Does anyone have a favourite out of the above?

Hee hee.

You're asking for 4 answers at least. None of those!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

OK DD... trust you to throw a spanner in!!!  :nowink:

I'll add another question.....

If 'none of the above' onions then which variety would you recommend?  :tongue2:

Centurion - but I appreciate you can't get them from Wilko's.

All three you mention are pretty good onions.

I have only grown Sturon from your list and now it is the only one I bother with. It seems to bulk up well and also stores well. I have found others - especially red onions have gone to seed easily or just not bulked up.

I grew Stuttgarter last year from sets and they grew and stored very well - hardly any bolting in the very hot dry patch we had around here. in the summer It was all the more impressive since I put them in a depleted, lumpy clay soil and didn't feed them properly.

I'm growing Sturon this year.

I grew Sturon from sets last year and they did well. I've got 350 of them this year to put in shortly.

Thanks for all your replies....

I'm on a very, very tight budget this year for my allotment so a few bags of both Sturon and Stuttgart from Wilkos will do the trick.  :)
