can you grow melon and cucumber at the same time?
« on: March 15, 2011, 21:47 »
I read somewhere that you cannot grow melon and cucumber together as they will cross polinate and both will end up not tasting very nice.  Is this true?  I have a female only cucumber - last year I did not and it was a disaster, lots of cucumbers all tasting bitter

They will both be grown in my small greenhouse.
Thanks in advance  :D

If two plants cross pollinate, it will affect the seeds, not the flesh.  Greenhouse cucumbers should not generally be pollinated.

If cross pollination took place, I would say that it would not affect the melon, as you are not eating the seeds, but the cucumber could suffer.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grown both in the same greenhouse. The end of the "Melon row" is right next to the "Cucumber row" and I've never had a problem with them.

Not sure that answers you question, as such, though.

Kristen, may I ask which varieties you grow?

I've grown all sorts of Melons over the years - suckered (as I see it!) by the marketing Blurb Promise. I now think that Sweetheart is the best melon for me - in the sense that some years I have not had enough time to hand-pollinate, pinch-out and train, but always Sweetheart has carried some fruit where others have had none under such abuse.

For Cucumbers I just grow an all-female F1. At the moment its F1 Bella (which I've grown for a few years now), but only because that's the seed packet that the garden centre stocks :)
