Pigeon deterrents
« on: March 11, 2011, 10:31 »
What do you use for keeping pigeons off your veg?  Do old CD's do anything. What aboutstring criss crossed over the beds? But doesnt string get in the way of the plants as they grow?

Debris netting also.

CD's are as much use as a chocolate tea pot.  Tried them once, pigeons had their lunch when I went for mine.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

some neighbours have humming tape. Don't see it achieves a lot but it's quite a relaxing sound...

i also have pigeon problems on my plot too, so i'll watch this space.... :-)
a few people up my lotty-hill have the wire stuff that goes inside concrete on top of parts of their beds.
will this be for pigeons, do you think, or cats?

Debris netting also.

Any sort of netting will do for keeping pigeons off, although you need something like debris netting with the smaller mesh size to keep cabbage white butterflies off brassicas, and smaller still (enviromesh) for carrots/parsnips against carrot fly.

(I've also tried suspended CD's; pigeons ignore them, blue tits climb on them to admire their reflections, budgerigar-style!)  :(
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I find things that move tied to criss cross string works provided they aren't too hungry, discourages them and sends them to easier pickings .....  bright silver crisp packets insides tied like bowes round the string, hanging CDs or foil trays..... ???    I have developed magpie chic!     :D :D

Up our site there are loads of flapping bits of foil and warning tape, string and cds etc all above rows of eaten spring cabbage :nowink:

The only decent cabbage is under pigeon netting. Nuff said :nowink:

Netting but should be pulled tight so small birds don't get tangled in it.
Watched a pheasant one night trying to reach lettuce under net by sitting in the middle.
Couldn't reach untill its mate came along and there combined wieght was enough to push the net down. Both had a nice supper. Had to give them 10 out of 10 for persistence.

Interesting stuff 8doubles, the hawk eye doesnt scare anything. More entertaining, but think the netting will be cheaper and be hopefully successful.

I bought a catapult the other year but it didnt travel far enough - it took me 6months to realise it was for maggots and fishing. Oops.  :D

I collect old gardening books and one suggestion was to paint an upturned plant pot bright red and hang on a stake above the crop - sounds weird and I haven't tried it but you never know :D
