Has anyone sown brassicas yet?
« on: March 09, 2011, 20:49 »
I'm thinking of sowing my Calabrese, Cauli's, Sprouts, and summer cabbage this weekend in trays and placing them in my unheated greenhouse covered with a double layer of fleece to keep the sun off them.

Yep - sowed some caulis in January in the frost free greenhouse. Potted on 39 yesterday. Now in the unheated one, looking really strong.

Also got 21 out of 20 "Greyhound" cabbage germinated, (I blame my 5 thumbs), they were sown a bit later & not ready for potting on.

Don't like sowing brussels too early as I think they tend to blow if they are too mature when the weather is still warm.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I hope not, they want solid ground.

I'm hanging on for possibly another month for the sprouts.

All mine are in modules under plastic.

April cabbage, Extra early rudolf and summer purple broccoli, and Beaumont F1 callabrese.

About a dozen of each, will start some more in a couple of weeks, for continuation of supply!
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

Cauli's and Sprouts planted indoors this weekend gone.

Sowed sprouts middle of April last year and the awful winter meant I didn't really get many so thought I'd try them a bit earlier this year.

Calabrese probably this weekend.

I was late with everything last year due to illness.

I didn't sow sprouts until May and they were fine!

I think not getting any was more down to the harsh weather than your sowing time.

Sown some Greyhound Cabbage and All Year Round Cauli's at weekend.
I use small yoghurt pots to start them off and then pot on into loo rolls.

Any reason why you don't start them straight off in loo rolls?

Any reason why you don't start them straight off in loo rolls?

It allows me to cover the stem up to the 1st set of leaves so that the roots are deeper when planted out.
I'm sure I read that they should always be planted to a depth of the 1st leaves and, doing it this way, I'm hoping for a head start!

Fair point.

I use seed tray inserts, the 20 to a half seed tray size and then pot in into 3" pots, but I need a large root ball due to my clubroot.

I hope not as my sprouts, cabbages and cauli's have all been started in loo rolls. I'm going to score the sides when I plant them out to help them along.
