Anyone sown toms?
« on: March 15, 2014, 15:34 »
I've just sown my second lot.  First are 3 weeks old and growing fast...

Be interested to know if anyone else has sown yet.

I've sown 12 - sufficient for a heated greenhouse. That's all.

Those destined for the unheated greenhouse and the great outdoors are still tucked up in their packets.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have only sown my 2 early Garden Pearl on a - if they live they give early toms/if they die it's no big deal, basis

The others will still be in the packets for a while as they only have a cold greenhouse to go in to.

Mine are in the polytunnel and are about 3" high. They are getting plenty of natural light now. They are on shelving belonging to a 4 tiered little growhouse. Most nights I have a small tubular heater on the bottom shelf and cover the whole thing with a blanket if it goes cold at night. They seem happy enough. Chillies having the same treatment and are the best I've grown. It worked last year and things are a lot milder this year. Still best not to forget them if late in from the pub tho ! :-)

I sowed 2 each of most varieties a couple of weeks ago and they're just poking their heads above the ground. I'll do a second sowing in a couple of weeks or so. I've found it doesn't make much difference but the early sowing is to stop me panicking.  :D

Potted on those destined to grow in the frost free greenhouse and the hanging baskets (which will be inside for a while too of course), but the majority are safely in their packets for another two or three weeks yet.

My first sowing are about 12" high and in their 12" tubs. They are too big to bring into the house, so I wrap them up in newspaper every night and put the heater on. I think they will be OK, but it is always a bit risky. They have tiny flower buds visible.
The second sowing are about 4" high and live on the window ledge.
The third sowing have just germinated and are about 1" high.

Yep, got 9 up at the moment. 3 different varieties, 4 plants potted on to 6" pots. All in dining the room and doing well. All are destined for the greenhouse which has a small paraffin heater. I maybe too early but I got too impatient during the wet weather and planted loads of seeds this year

Five varieties, about a hundred plants in large cells. Will be giving some away but planning on bottling a lot of plum toms whole as they are so much nicer than tinned ones. Cherry and beef for eating, one for early greenhouse, and one for large, easy to peel for chutneys. It is tradition here to sow on boxing day, but I waited till mid feb.
