Is this a good deal?
« on: March 09, 2011, 20:40 »
I'm looking to buy compost online and came across this:

£49.70 each
50ltr bag
https://www.dandystopsoil.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=327&Itemid=594

Is it cheap or average compared to shop prices?

Not checked your link Munchkin but I think (hope!) you might have mis-quoted the price in your post!

That seems very expensive. I dont know what the quality is like but I get 3 x 60ltrs Been and queued compost for £10. They deliver for a small charge.

The link doesn't take you to a specific product, so I can't see what you're looking at, but at that price, I sincerely hope you've either mis-read or mis-typed!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Well when you change the preset quantity field from 40 to 1 on the 25lt bags (at £2.90 each)  it changes to say 50 ltrs for £49.70. Thats either a hiccup on the site or a no no price

Edit,
Now it wont even go back to showing a page with 25lt on, only says 50lt, its cuckoo  >:(

Hahah that's funny!

Ok I just looked at BNQ and it's not letting me buy online even though I'm registered and signed in *scratches head*

If you make the quantity 2, it's £22.10 each. I think it's somethikng to do with their minimum order, but that seems to flucuate in the £40's.

You get forty 50litre bags on a pallet, so multiples of forty are the cheapest price. For my postcode multi-purpose organic compost is £2.68 a bag x 40 = £107 delivery free. If I just wanted five they are £9.50 each again free delivery.

So unless you want 40 bags online isn`t a viable way to buy it.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

If you only want a few bags for seed sowing etc see what your allotment shop is doing. We sell 72 ltrs for £4. Failing that, wait for the special offers in Tescos etc. If you're filling up raised beds or something, you need topsoil off a contractor.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I just found http://www.norfolktopsoil.co.uk/Topsoil2.html

Has anyone ordered from here? I need to fill some raised beds with organic stuff so I figured this would be ok. It doesn't say it's organic just 100% natural so I'm guessing it's the same thing, right?

If you mean organic as per Soil Association rules then probably not; if this is your concern then you could always ask before ordering.

(Trouble is the word "organic" has a precise meaning in Chemistry, a vague one when it comes to rotted plant material in soil, and a different one again when it comes to ecologically sustainable farming!)

Hi Munchkin - I also checked out your link and the quantity fields were auto-filled with (I think) minimum order quantities. Average prices, as far as I can work out (D for maths A level, so don't rely on me!!)  BnQ, as mentioned before, are doing 125ltrs for £6.98, which seems reasonable value to me?

Yo Munchkin, the original Dandys site you pointed at shows a 50ltr bag cost of £2.68 with a minimum order of 40 bags.  THey prefer to sell the big volumes that don't actually come in bags but by the cubic metre.

Not really aimed at the actual ordinary gardener!
