Advice needed from experienced breeders please
« on: March 09, 2011, 17:40 »
Hi
My broody hen has remained broody for over a week even after being kept in a broody cage.  :( She was broody last year for 9 weeks.
I have decided to put a few fertile eggs under her.
Today I let her stay in the nestbox with an egg under her.
I am going to put the broody coop on the floor of the stable where they sleep and put a small dog carrier in it for a nest box, this will give her peace from the other girls.
I might be able to get some fertile eggs very soon, do I let them sit for 24 hours to rest, they are only coming on a 10 minute journey. I would be happy for between 1-3 eggs only.
All advice welcome.  :)

if you are fetching the eggs yourself then they don't need resting (although was told guinea fowl eggs still do). I would pop at least 3 eggs under as not all may hatch and remember you could still end up with all boys. Do not let the others into the broody coop as they may lay their eggs in there as well.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Right- I have been given 6 eggs from my daughters Young Farmer's friend.
He wasn't sure how fertile they were and wanted to give me 6.
I got 1 Welsummer, 2 Nankin's and 3 lakenvelders. They are under the broody already.
Don't know if she will sit the whole time and how many if any hatch and how many will be cockerals.
Will keep you posted.

I'm not sure what resting does. I was always told that you leave them for 12 hours or so to bring them up to room temperature so that it wasn't such a shock when they go into the incubator. And that, of course, really depends on what temperature they were to begin with. In the summer, when it's warm I just put them straight into the incubator.
