Summer raspberry question
« on: March 08, 2011, 23:00 »
Hi.

I planted some bare root Tulameen last December. There's no sign of growth yet so I'm wondering if I can hope for even a small amount of fruit this year - or is that optimistic?

Ta.

Leave them to it, they will grow, just need a bit of time yet, mine are only just starting to show :)

You should get a crop this year, might only be small but you should still get a crop :)

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

We have the same variety, well established though.

There isnt much in the way of growth on ours yet either, Some are showing signs and others are not.  Once they do start you'll be amazed at how much growth  you get.

No reason why there shouldn't be some fruit once they get going.
Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

They are summer fruiting, (Floricane). They will fruit on last year's canes, the canes that are thrown up this year will bear the fruit for 2012.

If they were planted with canes you may get a few fruit. If they were cut down prior to planting, I'm afraid you won't.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Good clarification there DD.
My earlier reply was misleading, I made the mistake of assuming the canes had not been cut right back.

Thanks everyone.

Just to clarify, the canes were supplied about one foot long and I didn't trim them further. They're not 'long canes' however, so I think I'll be lucky to see any this year.

No problem, I have Joan J to look  forward to this late summer/autumn and next year will be upon me before I know it.

You'll probably get a couple of shoots coming up each side of the main cane, some may flower, but my dad (the oracle!) always said you should pinch off the flowers this year to enable the plant to establish well for next year. I confess I left one of my summer rasp canes last year to fruit, and got about 8 raspberries, so not sure it was worth it!

But nice with Corn Flakes for breakfast or Ice Cream later in the day, even a few for a taster goes down a treat.
