Can you grow strawberries in a growbag?
« on: March 02, 2011, 07:55 »
The thought occurred to me last night (as it does!)

Are grow bags suitable for growing strawberries (year old plants from a garden centre?)

Thanks

Hi,
I think plenty of people do grow them like this and have seen them advertised for such purpose in garden centres round here.  I would just say that they will probably need top up feeds to make sure they continue to get all the nutrients that they need and you may have to decide to either re-pot them for the following year or really top up the bags with good muck and feed regularly as they will have used up all the grow bag nutrients in the the first year.

Yes
Second year in the same bags.
Move them into green house mid Feb to give an early crop, then back outside end of June.

Echo above comments, especially pigeonpie's.

Just ditched the grow bag we have had strawberries in for about 5 years. Think we've had our moneys worth out of that one by now, emptied it out on to one of the beds.

Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

I would just emphasise the need for constant feeding - the compost in a growbag will be exhausted after about 6 weeks so you need to ensure there is sufficient long-term fertiliser in there to provide sustenance for the strawberries for years rather than weeks.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I planted a runner I bought from ASDA the other day and checked today to see it was dead should I have covered with black plastic or flees? I asked this elsewhere before planting but got no reply so just went and planted with fingers crossed. Think I will Google more rather than relying on the one site.

cheers Bill

No you didn't need to cover the plant Bill, strawberry plants are hardy little things, it wouldn't have been frost that killed it.

Google where you will ;)  but I think your last comment is a little unkind to the people on the forum who have been answering your questions lately  :(

Shouldn't just rely on one site anyway Bill, many of us have another life as well, we don't sit here 24/7 you know!

I hadn't seen that particular post or I would have answered it.

This was not a snipe at the site.

I was stating that I did not receive an answer and as I have been relying on this site for 95% of my support I fell that it was the reliance on one site for answers that lead to my problem. I for one appreciate that not all questions can be answered straight away.

I'm sorry if you felt it came across as a snipe.

I was just stating in my own clumsy way that I should not rely on one source.

Now hopefully I have cleared that misunderstanding what is the best way to plant them out? when I said it is dead I am making this assumption on the fact that the shoots it had on the roots have withered and fallen off could it be that the plant itself is alive and the shoots naturally withered when I planted it on? Should I have covered the shoots as well was this a mistake in planting as I think root soil shoot sun.

Or if it has died what are the sure-fire ways of planting out strawberries. I planted in multi purpose compost if that helps?

When you plant a strawberry plant  you should spread out the roots around a small mound of earth in their planting hole before filling it in and firming down.

Make sure you plant them at the correct depth too:
