Potatoes chitting too fast?
« on: February 27, 2011, 16:45 »
Hi all, Bought some seed potatoes from the excellent Hulme Potato Day last week, put them in trays and in a North facing, unheated bedroom. They started sprouting midweek, the problem now is that I'm off to watch the cricket for 3 weeks, and I'm worried I'll return to some sort of potato forest.  Should I do anything different, or just leave them to it?

thanks,

Andy

They're going to chit whatever you do with them.  As long as the room is frost-free, I'd just make sure they are in decent light and leave them to it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You may be OK, be to be on the safe side I'd be chitting them in something where they can "breath" better than plastic modules - egg boxes or even an open seed tray from example.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for that, I'll leave them be.  The trays seem ok, plenty of air around the pots, though I'll start saving my egg boxes up for this time next year!

You should have seen the wizzened ones I planted in June a couple of years back - still grew!

Try misting them every now and then with a fine spray. Not too long before they go in now.

As long as frost-free doesn't mean centrally-heated hot they'll be fine (you're going to plant them, not eat them!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
