Squash on Top of Compost Heap
« on: February 24, 2011, 12:25 »
I have just finished filling one of my compost bins made from pallets, about 1m x 1m.

If I put some soil on the top mixed with some chicken pellets could I plant a squash on it?

Yeah, my neighbours did this last year,  the number + quality of the squashes, courgettes and marrows they produced was outstanding!

In fact I think they just planted direct into the manure.

I don't even plant squash seeds. The ones already buried in the compost sprout on their own. It's nice to get free plants but it's annoying that I can't dig out the compost now  >:(

Yes you could. :) I planted a couple of unwanted stray (:() courgettes in one of the daleks last year and they absolutely flourished! :D The only, very slight, nuisance was not being able to add composting material. ::) Small price, I think. :)

I've just made my first pallet compost bins and looking forward to growing some squash or pumpkins on top.

I'd fill the bin nearly to the top, you need a gap for growing room and for adding more compost or muck etc as the potting medium does slump so be aware that your courgette or whatever could sink out of sight  :D

I get it ready beforehand and then leave it time to slump before planting the courgette or squash plant

I turn a compost heap out onto a spare patch of ground down the allotment and grow various squash on it every year. With a lot of success I may add and it uses up a spare corner of ground that can't be used for anything else. Win/win situation.  :D

I grow summer squash and courgettes on the rotting heap with good results. Just need to watch out that the heap doesn't get too dry it in a hot summer.

Thanks for all the reply's.
I'll turn the heap into the next bay, give it time to settle and then add some extra from one of the bays thats ready. I'll add a upturned 2 litre bottle, in the hope we get a good summer, so I can water the roots.
