Green manure
« on: August 04, 2006, 10:11 »
OK we have gone through the merits or otherwise of seaweed I have taken your thought of green manure to heart,  and now I am going to have a go at the green manure.
My difficulty is which one to choose so some expert advice please.
My soil is sandy and acid, a high rainfall and 6 weeks without the sun over Christmas.
I am  70yrs (very nearly) and I want to do as little digging as possible.
I would like to sow the green manure ASAP so that it will germinate and get a little growth on before the winter.(thought it might be easier to turn in early spring).
I have clubroot so none of the brassica family would be suitable.
Looking at various Internet sites I though Alsike clover might be a possibility.......not found anyone that would supply seed.
Thanks in anticipation

try the organic gardening catalogue www.organiccatalogue.com they have seed for a whole raft of green manures including the alskike clover you are looking for.

you are in a lovely part of the world.  We did a tour of the west coast of scotland many moons ago in our little ridge tent starting at oban and went through Kyle after a quick stop on Skye before carrying on northwards to durness and tongue.  Had to resort to B&B in Ullapool as OH had decided to jog down Ben Nevis and couldn't walk!  Fantastic coastline scenery and mysterious goings on in the lochs with submarines...
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

Unfortunately we have to get rid of "shop world" first before we can even think about ever having a proper holiday again...but when we do Scotland is on our list of places to revisit.

Thanks for that. They have never green manured before so want to have a go this year and this post has proved very useful. Thank you. Oliver
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.
