are your quails laying yet?
« on: February 18, 2011, 19:36 »
hi, i was just wondering if any quail owners out there are getting eggs yet as im a little concerned i have not had any eggs yet off mine! they are outside and not under artificial light. they were hatched last year but by the time they were old enough to lay the day length was too short but now im wondering if i have all males!

none of my girls are laying (I bought them in Sheffield so they may be related to yours!) when I got them home last year two laid one egg each and then nothing since!  Would be pleased to hear how you get on, but probably too cold yet
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

Dont worry girls :)  The only ones I have that are laying are indoors under artificial lighting....

The ones out in the pen are all keeping the hatches well battoned :)

Wont be long though,.... bout another 3 weeks :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

yes mine are from Storrs and he promised they were all girls.  We had two different colored eggs the first day back (so two certainly are) then nothing since!  They are in a two storey coup and spend all day huddling in an exposed downstairs corner, rather than going inside so not the brightest of birds I think!  Eggs in three weeks sounds good so will look forward to them!

Dont forget that quail are ground dwellers and do not roost.... so the fact that the cozy bit is upstairs is a total waste of time for them :(

Put the ladder away and cover up the space in the floor and then put them to live in the upstairs bit :)

I have heard people say their quail go up and down the ramps but have yet to see them do it myself :)

Mine aren't laying either yet. As for the two storey hutch mine go up and down the ramp, mainly because the food is in the top level so it makes them spread out a bit more  :)

Mine go upstairs to sleep at night too (running up the ramp) we also put them in there and shut the door when we want to move the coop to fresh grass.  They just spend all day downstairs, even in blizzards!  I have given them a cat litter tray both upstairs and down and they do like to get in that so have some shelter from the sides

Thats interesting.... i have lost count of the amount of people I tell not to bother having 2 levels as they wont use them :)

Most people say the same..... but maybe your quail are more intelligent than mine ;)

Stanley obviously inherited the stupidness from my mum =D (sorry mum don't kill me please!)
Stanley isn't stupid, he's just special, and thinks he's a little dog rather than the great big slobbering beast he actually is!
4 Dogs: Stanley, Oscar, Borris and Scraps, 8 chickens: Prada, Mulberry, Alessi, Apple, Dior, Bobbi, Eve and Fendi, 2 Guinea Pigs: Rupert and Milo, 3 Rabbits: Louis, Daisy and Charlie 2 Fish: Sandy and Pebbles, 6 Quail

Mine aren't laying yet either. I have brought mine in, I know they are hardy little things but I knocked them a temp home up in the garage when we had that really bad snow here (which was actually higher than the quail run itself! just looking out of the window and it's flaming snowing again here!   :(
