Hi all,
You might remember that I posted before saying what I planned to grow.  At the time I still hadn't heard what size allotment it was.  I now know that it is a "full plot" according to where I live... but in reality half a plot in accordance with general allotmenting...
Anyhow it works out at about 5mx23m or 15ftx75ft.

I think i'm a bit disappointed cause I wanted something bigger (although this is probably fine to start with!).  I expect it is a case of "eyes bigger than your belly" so please ignore and tell me to stop being silly!!

Anyhow, the site is exposed and long and narrow.  I haven't seen the actual plot but know the site and it is very open.
So I want to grow for sure on the allotment-
celeriac
sweetcorn
kale
beetroot
brussels
cabbage
pumpkin
squash
courgette
chard
leaf beet
french beans
pole beans
swede
broadbeans
parsnips

optional (can grow at home if need space)
toms
pepper
lettuce

What do you reckon?
I guess i can just put rows each side of a path going up the centre so say one row per metre so 23 rows? at 5m long? (I could at least have a row of everything this way!)  This is all so new and a bit daunting- def going to sit down with pen and paper and plan tonight! Ideas that I am not trying to be to ambitious and anything you would drop/ add to my list?

I think others will agree that, to start with, a half plot is MORE than enough to take on...  ;)

You want need anywhere near 1m spacing for a lot of these, celeriac, beetroot, swede, parsnips, will need 12" max, (sorry to mix the units), sweetcorn needs 18" blocks, but beware the pumpkins, squashes & courgettes - the great space gobblers!

(Where's the carrots & peas?)

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

He he thanks!  I know really that half a plot is fine...

Carrots I was going to grow in my raised bed at home (2mx2m) as they did really well last year but might try a row on the lotty to and net them all up.  Peas hadn't thought about TBH!

I can only say what works for me. "Off the shelf" wise, I've always had great sucess with Kelvedon Wonder. I've been itching to re-post my piccies:

If you do get stuck for space, try something like "Alderman" that grow up to 6'. Be warned they'll need netting or something to climb up, they won't grow like runner beans.

I'm hoping to be self-sufficient in heritage varieties from now.

Ohhhh they are very pretty  :tongue2:  I like the straight lines and they way they look so organised- I hope my plot looks something like that!
Could you give me an idea of how far apart the rows are and how much space inbetween the string?  Is there anything else supporting them in the middle?  Last question lol, how far apart are they sown?

Thsi is the recommended pea spacing within a row:

Rows should be sown apart the same distance as the height the plant ill grow to, in this case 2'6"

The supports in my case are about 8' apart, but you can use canes, but they would hsve to be closer.
