Red cabbage for winter harvest
« on: January 25, 2011, 10:06 »
Can anyone recommend a red cabbage suitable for picking in winter rather than autumn?

Last year I grew Red Flare according to packet instructions. Grew well but were ready too soon for us. By the time red cabbage seemed a good idea, they'd split.

Thanks.

Last year I grew Red Jewel and they stood in good condition right through, last one lifted monday. However allthough the packet said sow March, I waited till mid April before I started them off and transplanted early June.

I grow the variety I have to buy each year from the trader at the local car boot sale, after I kill my carefully selected variety seedlings!

Just harvested them this weekend and they tasted fine but they were only called 'Red cabbage'  ::) :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. Especially Aidy for the recommendation and sowing advice. I'll give Red Jewel a go this year.

Mine had a gooey outleaves, but once stripped down were fine, braised it all and froze it.

Red Flare needs to be picked in the Autumn as it is not hardy.

There's nothing like the experience of members on this site, which is why I posted my question. I grew Red Flare last year because the supplier's web site suggested it would be OK through to December, so I presumed they would stand well in the ground.

There's an F1 variety called Red Rodima, which is harvested October to March

I've done F1 Redcap in the past, its designed to be a mini veg but were big enough for a meal. Nice tight heads and a compact plant so you can squash lots in  :D The F1 Fuego I tried were a complete waste of space, none hearted up.

I'm just about to buy some seed from Moles ... none of their varieties are the ones recommended here :(

I reckon I'll take pot-luck based on the cropping period I want.  Here's their chart:

That's the conclusion I have come to - try Rodima and then report back so everyone else can then decide to grow it (or not!)
