Festive porridge
« on: December 17, 2010, 08:28 »
On a bit of a health kick at the mo.
Decided to try to brighten up my morning porridge, so I tried to make it more festive and added golden syrup, dried mixed fruit and a sprinkling of cinnamon  - delicious.

Has anybody any other recipes for making porridge a bit more interesting?
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

I would suggest the golden syrup is not very healthy.....but yummy though  :D

I add grated apple a couple of minutes before the end of cooking :)

Make it with pinhead oatmeal instead of porridge oats - more flavour/better texture. Takes a bit more cooking though so pour four times the quantity of boiling water over the grains and leave for half an hour before bringing to the boil for about 12min or so. Pinch of salt if you need it, otherwise that's it. Been eating it like this since my student days. Delicious.

Maple syrup and chopped pecans is nice if you like a bit of crunchy texture.

We have porridge all the time and I actually quite like it plain but, we usually have pumpkin seeds sprinkled on top and sometimes sliced banana too or fruit such as sultanas or raisins mixed through it whilst cooking :). OH has golden syrup on top too.

If we're being barbaric about porridge and are rejecting the trinity of water/oats/salt (and I can feel my sporran rising!)

Then:

Stir in some crunchy peanut butter.

Pre heat some coconut/dried fruits/nuts/sugar in some milk and stir this into a mily/cream porridge to make a sort of Egyptian/Scottish (Om Ali/Porridge) 'fusion food breakfast'.

Make Portuguese 'ovos moles' (egg yolks and sugar syrup) and swirl this into the porridge.

Use your imagination!

Asked OH to get me some value oats when he went to the supermarket once, to make porridge and flapjacks, and because he thinks I should have the best of everything he bought Special Organic Jumbo oats....yuk! Bless him. I hate big oats for porridge cos it feels lumpy, and for flapjacks they don't soak up the butter/syrup the same, so I had to whizz them up in the processor.
