Stopped squatting
« on: December 15, 2010, 09:18 »
Our four chickens have been laying an egg everyday for just  over a year now even through the really cold weather last winter and are still laying now.  However have noticed in the last few days they have stopped squatting when I go to stroke them and instead just run off...is this a sign that  they about to stop laying either because of moulting - which one or two are very slightly or because of  the colder weather ?

I'm  sure we've done nothing to upset them !!!!!
Dogs were born with three legs and a spare.

My cream legbar has stopped squatting too, Noticed it after she'd gone through a moult and she hasnt started laying again yet either, So maybe a moult is the reason why.

Probably because they have decided to stop laying so they dont need to squat.  Mine stop squatting when they are broody or coming out of it. They have no intention of laying so dont need to bow to anyone.  :tongue2:

My hens havnt started laying yet and have never squated!  Will they start squating when they come into lay?  Would make life a little eaiser to catch them if they did squat! (they are about 27weeks old)

Hi Gibbo - we've got two Wyandottes as well as the four others and they must be about the same age as yours and they haven't layed and egg or squat yet either !  Hubby is threatening them with the pot if they don't produce soon !!!!!

I have noticed with the broody girls that its about 2/3 days before they lay that they start to curtsy again.  Suppose it takes time to produce 1 in the pipe line.

only one of mine is laying, and she is now squatting.  She never used to but suddenly she started-  I was getting them into the coop for some food and she just stopped dead, stuck her wings out and refused to walk any further.  Well, that meant I had to carry her up the garden and give her an extra big tomato  :D
