Squatting
« on: April 23, 2009, 11:14 »
I’ve had my chickens since Saturday so am new to all this.

I went up behind one of my Babcocks yesterday in an attempt to pick her up, and she squatted, which surprised me a little as they normally run away from me. I then processed to stroke her before picking her up to reassure her, she then ruffles up all her feathers. It was all a little weird if i am honest. Does this mean anything, is this normal behaviour for a hen?

Your thoughts appreciated

Andy  ::)

Put a couple of golf balls in the nest box so that she'll know where to lay her eggs.

ITs soooo much easier when they squat for you, when they need checking it saves all that prancing around the garden. :lol:

Enjoy :)

If I want to pick up one of my hens so the grandchildren can stroke them or to examine them or put them back in their coop etc. I hold my hand over them and lower it, they squat (which I think looks really cute) and this make picking them up really easy

One of my girls started squatting late last week and last night there was an egg. Well more like half an egg, but i'll just have to cut some extra small soldiers  :)
