Which pots to buy for blueberries
« on: December 14, 2010, 10:13 »
I got three plants for my birthday  each one a different blueberry variety. I'm going to a garden center place today and will be able to get pots for them but not sure what size to get. The plants are 1 year old and roughly 10" tall i think.  They'll fit in the greenhouse until Spring so they don't get buried under the snow.

What is your experience with re-potting these things and what size pot would you recommend?

Although your plants are small at the moment they will not thank you if you put them into small pots and then have to re-pot them every year (bear in mind that although somewhat restricted by growing in pots they are still likely to eventually grow into bushes 4' high and nearly as wide, depending on variety.)

Blueberries mustn't be allowed to dry out, so larger pots, lined with plastic sheet if they are clay rather than plastic, will help with this.

Ericaceous compost, of course, keep them reasonably close together to improve the chances of cross-pollination as they are poor self-pollinators, rainwater rather than tap water and bob's yer auntie!

Good luck!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

48cm pot from Wilkinsons, soon to be moved to a 55 cm tub.

Slight disagreement with the idea of rain water rather then tap water. Don't use tap water.
I did just once when very dry, wilting and no rain water. They hated it and suffered.

Not sure what to suggest if you have no rain water, but they do not like tap water at all.

I bought 305mm tubs yesterday from bnq. Paid a fortune for the wrong tubs lol nevermind. I can use those tubs for something else. I'm going shopping for garden stuff next week and will get bigger ones then.

Do you recommend plastic over ceramic pots? I saw wood and was tempted with those too.

B&Q have been quite good at refunding some of my "mistakes"; if in unused condition you should be OK!

The ideal pot would be a light-coloured plastic (retains water better and keeps the roots cooler) but it's really up to you; it's you that will be doing the watering!  :)

My allotment friend has a couple of blueberry plants in large pots (at least 2 ft diameter) sink in the ground.  This keeps their rootball cool in the summer and stops it freezing in the winter.

Hi, I have blueberries in rhino tubs they have handles which makes it easier to move them and my husband drillied a drainage hole on the side big enough to take a bottle cork so in drier weather they can be watered and the hole bunged to retain some moisture in the soil. We have 2 bushes that are about 5 years old and they give us a small bowl of blueberries every day throughout the summer. :)

I'm not sure what you mean by drainage hole. I'm trying to picture it. So you fill the tub quite high with water and leave it for a bit wit the cork in?

Yeah I'm wondering the same thing.

I'm not taking the pots back as I've used them and I need somewhere to put my garlic anyway.

I saw this site but want to go to a shop to avoid postage if I can help it:
http://www.thegardensuperstore.co.uk/acatalog/Extra_Large_Plant_Pots.html

One more question, do the pots need to be 50cm deep or 50cm in diameter?

I like the trug idea - they'd be about 50cm wide AND deep, and you can get them from as da and te sco for about £3.
