easiest breed to sex at birth?
« on: November 28, 2010, 16:17 »
hi all,

im hoping to breed some more chicks when things start to warm up (dont tell my wife!) and i was wondering which breeds are easiest to sex at birth, id prefer good layers and/or meat birds?
i like welsummers, sussex, are there any ways of telling at birth which sex they are?

 :)

Sussex can be colour sexed if light hens and buff cockerel.... but this would take planning at the laying stage.

Marans are colour sexing, as are legbars.

But wellsummers are all the same :(
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

I think Chookiechook means that they are a cross ie buff Sussex cockerel and Light Sussex hen. Pure Light Sussex are difficult to sex sometimes you have to wait for the cockerels to crow!!! ::)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

The way it works is that if you have silver/white hens and a buff cockerel then the chicks hatch out different colours ..... sorry, cant remember with any accuracy what the colours are :(

Why not post a pic of your birds and we will all have a guess ;)

Thats as I remember it too.   :D
Cream legbars are the eas :Diest to sex....at hatch, boys are paler than girls, and have a yellow patch on their heads. They lay lovely big (blue) eggs, and mine are still laying in the cold!

They are large fowl, light feather. and very pretty too.
