Snow v Pigeons
« on: November 24, 2010, 11:07 »
Although we have not yet had any snow, the forecast is that we may do.  Even if it melts within a few hours, the weight of it will trash plants under a net.

So do you remove the net to save them from being crushed and leave them at the mercy of the feathered rat, or set up a plan B?

I know that by using a wide mesh the snow will fall through, but I have had problems with these nets trapping songbirds.  They sit on the edge and drop through, but cannot fly out with extended wings.  The result is that I have to let them out, if the cats haven't pulled half the netting up getting to them.

I think as these birds have a tough enough time of it when it snows, I will leave my beloved brassica's to the mercy of nature.  My cabbages should be OK with a net draped very loosely over, but my sprouts and broccoili might have to take one for the team  :(

What is everyone else planning to do?

My netting stayed in place last snowfall!! Pigeons will get your brassicas if you take it off!!!
It all depends what you put into the ground, to what you get out

I have pigeon netting that I use instead of insect netting when all the cabbage whites have gone to sleep for the winter.

my dad hates pigeons  :D

if the worst comes to worst he resorts to swaering and throwing things out the kitchen window to scare them away.  its so funny, i just can't wait to say to my dad "look your friends are here, they're having a party of their life!!"
