my chicken has started limbing today, any suggestions??
« on: November 15, 2010, 17:39 »
Hi, my chicken has started limbing today.  I cannot see anything obvious on it's leg or foot, she is weight bearing on it, and continues to eat and drink.  This is our first chicken problem, does anyone have any idea's or is it best to visit the vet ASAP???

Personally, I would not worry too much and just keep an eye on her for a few days.  She may have landed awkwardly when jumping down from her perch.  I have had this before with a hen and it righted itself.  Provided you have checked and there is nothing in or stuck under her foot or on her leg, in other words no apparent reason for it.  If she deteriorates though or its no better after 2-3 days it would be better to get a vet to give her a check over. alison

after you have done a thorough check of her feet feel to see if her leg is warm - it could be a sign of a break or fracture if it is.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I had the same problem with clucky a few weeks ago.  She was limping quite badly but was fine apart from that.  Within a couple of days she was back to normal.  Enjoy your chicken keeping, I am  :)

Hi Welshdingo

How old is she?

I had a similar problem with one of my girls. Noticed one day that she was limping quite badly. Took her to the vets a few days later after it hadn't improved and he said she had broken her thigh bone in the past and where it has healed one leg is shorter than the other but she is not in any pain at all.

Maybe a trip to the vets if it doesn't improve.

Hope this helps.

Let us know how you get on.
