What do you do when you get blue mold growing on the old stems ? Also, what are you supposed to do when the compost dries and shrinks ?

The whole top of the kit including forming mushrooms has dried out. I keep damping but the water just sits on the bottom. Only one harvest :-(

If the water's running through, sounds like the compost has dried out through under-watering.

If it were a plant, you'd plunge the whole lot in a bucket of water, but this is going to be difficult with a mushroom kit!

I've just put in an order for some of the mushroom dowels. We recently had a silver birch cut down and thought it would be good to put it to use (as well as burning some in a couple of years). I've got 30 dowels each of shitake and oyster along with a packet of capping wax.

Anyone tried this successfully? if so, any tips?
