Over winter crops
« on: November 03, 2010, 12:22 »
Hi all

Thought this might be a good time to ask this question.  I know we have missed the boat for this season but what do you recommend for over winter veggies - I feel that our plot could do more for us over the winter months.

We have January King cabbages and purple sprouting broccoli and did kale last year - can anyone recommend any others that grow in really cold weather - here in the north-east it does get rather cold in Jan and Feb.

Thanks

willnbirdie

Parsnips for sure.

Maybe salsify and scorzonera, got them in this year but not tried them yet, has been suggested they maybe a waste off time. :) :) :)

Do you start these off in pots first or directly into the ground and when would you expect to harvest?

I've only grown garlic and onions over the winter and have never had much success with cabbage, (my last lot was eaten down to the stump! Never did find out what did it but possibly rabbits).

I start mine off in pots, so they can go in wherever I have space after early crops. You are supposed to be able to harvest until April, but I always run out before that ;)

Another very hardy one is Tundra...it's a savoy cabbage cross variety so the taste isn't quite as strong as some of the savoys. It also stands for cutting until march/april  :) The seeds can be expensive, so it's worth having a look around for them  :)

I think the conversation is at cross purposes (or else I'm slow today)... but correct me if I'm wrong:

Willnbirdie- are you asking about what you can grow so you are harvesting more over the late Winter/Early Spring?
And Munchkin, you're talking about what you can sow now?

For late winter/ spring cropping:

Leaf beets like Chard, Perpetual spinach
Broccoli- early and late purple sprouting
Brussels Sprouts
Winter and Savoy Cabbage
Cauliflower
Celeriac (need to cover with straw or cloches to protect from October, but can keep lifting until Spring that way)
Celery (trench varieties)
Chicory
Endive
Kale
Chinese Greens like Tsoi Sim, Komatsuna, Mizuna, Mibuna, Mispoona, Chinese Cabbage, and there's a variety of Pak Choi on realseeds catalogue called Tai Sai that crops overwinter, and Kohl Rabi- all may need a little protection in a harsh winter.
Leeks
Lettuce (winter varieties, with cloche)
Overwintering onions
Garlic
Parsnip
Peas- Smooth varieties for a head start to harvesting next year (if the mice don't get 'em)
Broadbeans- as above
Winter radish, like Mino
Salsify and Scorzonera
Spinach- winter vars
Swede
Turnip
Land Cress
Good King Henry, perennial- crops in Spring
Hamburg Parsley (similar to parsnip)
Corn Salad

erm... and thats all I can see on my trusty wallchart (is that cheating?) :D
 :tongue2:

It was confusing Spartacat.............so I've split off Munchkin's question about planting now and hope the thread makes better sense  ;)
