I don't think we've fully missed the boat for this season. I'm still planting salad in succession. I just started spinach, broad beans and garlic a couple of weeks ago. I'm looking for other stuff to sow now, anyone got suggestions?

Does it matter what type of onions or parsnip or can I sow any kind now?

The only onions that you can sow, or plant as sets, now are overwintering onions. The 'ordinary' varieties are started in early spring.

Parsnips also get sown in spring.

As far as I know, its quite a limited list of crops you can sow now... even for hardy plants, the last sowings usually happen around September.

If you have an unheated polytunnel, you can try the following Oriental leaf varieties, which are available from the realseeds catalogue, and perhaps other places:
Yukina Savoy Leaf Green
Bekana Chinese Salad Cabbage
Komatsuna, which has shoots not dissimilar to broccoli, but suitable for impatient growers like me! :D
Tsoi Sim
Tai Sai Pak Choi

and also smooth varieties of peas- though i don't bother as mice usually get them, and for an early crop, I prefer to sow a variety called Oskar in the Spring.

You can probably still sow onions, like the Japanese varieties, to give you a slightly earlier crop than the Spring sown ones (at least I hope so, because I have a bag of them that still need planting) :D
And Rhubarb/ Raspberries/ Apples etc etc!!

Thanks a lot SpartaCat!

raspberries sound very appealing. I'm of to research them now.
