What's eating my runner bean?
« on: September 28, 2010, 21:50 »
I bought a runner bean plant in early June. It sulked all summer, producing flowers but no beans. Finally, in the past three weeks or so, it relented and started grudgingly putting out a few beans, but now something is eating its leaves: some leaves have been completely munched; others have been partly nibbled, but when I examine them, I can't see any beasties at all.

Any ideas?

My first culprit would be slugs / snails, even if you can't see them :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Check for slime

slime = slugs or snails  :tongue2:

check for squarish, blackish green droppings (frass)

frass = caterpillars  :tongue2:

I found loads of baby snails munching on the pods I was saving for next year.
They may be little but they can't half climb (and eat >:( )

They eat out of all proportion to their size, don't they?
