Leeks

All the books say to plant out leeks when they're the width of a pencil. But mine are about 4mm diameter. Can I still plant them out? I'm miles late as it is.
Incidentally I haven't been mattocking yet - no time until Wednesday. Work is interfering with important horticultural matters.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I've planted 'thin' leeks and had fair results - not show standard, but fine for the table.

Leeks like a fairly fertile soil so I give them some general purpose fertiliser (fish, blood and bone) and maybe some extra nitrogen but I'm cautious about chemical nitrogen (urea, sulphate of ammonia) as it can make the growth too lush and encourage pests.

Be careful with that mattocking, btw - I think you can get arrested for it :)

Thanks for the advice. I'll give them a go this week.
I'll try to get some mattocking pics - could be some for the connoisseur
