starbucks are doing used coffee grounds
« on: September 17, 2010, 09:32 »
I had to pick some up cos they were free!!!!!! But I have no idea wat to do with them. Why are used grounds good for the garden. Will it be ok for my chooks.

Do just lob it on the grass/borders or do i need to compost it.

Being a bit on the frugal side my OH suggested reusing them first.!!!!!!!

I wouldn't reuse it because you don't know how long it's been lying around or how it's been stored.

I'm assuming it's the same as using tea leaves.  My Nanny used to put them on the soil round the plants and on the compost :)

My next door neighbour works in our local *bucks so my ready supply gets used around the garden and the plot. I use them as a general mulch on the veg beds as an aid to compost in my black dalek, I dig them in any empty spaces and as sprinkled rings around stuff I want to keep the slugs off. The grounds are a natural thing so will rot down quite happily over time. Each bag from *bucks comes sealed with a little sticker giving advice on how to use the grounds.

Not a good idea to put them straight into the soil as they take up nitrogen from the soil before they break down which takes a while.

Use sparingly around prized plants to deter slugs. Sprinkle the remainder in your compost heap or dalek to help break down process.

I am with the original poster in that I always took the starbuck coffee grounds because they were free and yet I didn't know what to do with them once I got them home!

I can't get them now, living where I do, but I have just spotted the following article that might help if you are into chemistry!!

If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!

I have used loads of used *bucks coffee bits, put them around plants and into composter.  Also do the same when making perculated coffee and often treat us to coffee bags which go straight in to the composter.  Maybe thats why I did so badly this year with most of my produce!!!
