Runner Bean - Moonlight
« on: September 05, 2010, 16:38 »
A self-pollinating runner bean, new on the market.

Now, I do like the sound of that!

Moonlight
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's a must try then, and it's a white one ;)  :)

I've still got stacks of "White Lady" seed, but I'm sorely tempted.

Nicky's Nurseries seem to be good value for them.

I have grown moonlight this year, on a munty frame obviously, quite pleased with the results. The plants grew just fine with plenty of creamy white flowers followed by more than enough pods for my needs and even enough excess crop to hand out to friends and neighbours. My usual runners are galaxy and I found moonlight to be slightly smaller in size both pods and beans but very nice none the less.

DD - I think that all white-flowered varieties of runner bean are self-pollinating, so if your only reason to give up on the White Lady is for that reason alone then you might as well save your pennies.

None of the stockists seem to mention this in the blurb about "White Lady", so why are they so pointed about it when it comes to "Moonlight"?

It's apparantly a cross between a French & runner bean, (French beans are self pollinating), with the shape of a runner, but taste of a French bean.

Me too.

Think the White Lady will be going in again. Really pleased with this year's results.

but the White Lady are yielding as much on fewer plants. Can't be bad  ;)

I've grown Celebration for the last 2 years and am quite happy with them apart from the fact they seem to give up rather early (like right now!)

I seem to remember Pippa Greenwood recommending "Armstrong" as her top choice in one of my donated copies of Gardener's World; I've never heard of them, so am wondering whether anyone has any experience of growing them (all I want is good flavour, no stringiness, and lots of them!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Loads flowers still on mine and they don't seem to go stringy as quick, they're still quite tender with slightly swollen seed.

is a string bean a runner bean? and a harricot bean a butter bean?
