my chicken is limping - poor henny - what to do
« on: September 04, 2010, 19:31 »
I only noticed it this afternoon - we let them roam for an hour or two before bedtime and when we let them out I noticed she was limping - the others are fine.  I have examined her feet, legs, joints etc and can see no obvious causes - her foot seems to be under her when she is walking as opposed to one either side if I am making sense.  Any ideas of what this could be or is this a trip to the vet - I seem to be living there at the moment with one animal or another :( thanks chicken peeps - please help

I can't help much but I would keep an eye and if it gets any worse take her to the vet if your vet is one that understands chickens.  Not all of them do.  I am not very experienced and I'm sure that someone more experienced will be along to give you more advice.

does her leg feel warm? Perhaps a break.
She could have dislocated it (this is how one of mine was hobling when she had) so you will need a vet to pop it back in and sooner rather than later - the longer it is left the less chance of it recovering.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Sounds like a problem I had with one of mine. The vet wouldn't even look at him, told me to put him to sleep! I massaged it daily and restricted his movements, some days it was better than others. Eventually it got better and he doesn't even have a limp now. We think he caught it on a bit of wire mesh and either dislocated or broke it, he was curling it under and walking on the knuckle.
