How Long Broody
« on: August 30, 2010, 20:28 »
Hi

I got a mother and 8 chicks from Selby market (£17 for the lot) mother hen started to lay and for two months only missed two days, She went broody and spent 2 weeks on nest box. My springer pup barged past when I was chucking in some greens and got a cockerel, the others 3 s crowing  >:(got that bad they ended up in the freezer, ( my sister calls small cockerels killed young chicken nuggets).
Now she is back with the four girls out in the day perching at night time how long before she starts to lay again ???. After her lovely eggs I am lothed to buy supermarket ones.
Is there any sound better than contented chickens rosey away, far better tha whale song!

She will probably need to moult and regrow her feathers ready for the winter.  Hens change their feathers each year.  Often after being broody they will go straight into a moult.

Is she a hybrid or pure breed.  The hybrids should get their moult over fairly quickly and come back into lay.  A pure breed may not start to lay again til next spring.

Is she fed on layers pellets?  Also if you think that she is moulting some extra protein and vitamins would be helpful, though not essential.

All the best
Sue

she may have just a partial moult but if she hasn't gone into a moult (partial or full) then she could start laying fairly quickly.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi
She is a marran i do not know her age, on the food front she get layers pellets in a hopper, greens leaves of some sort hung for them to peck and corn when I go past. She is fully feathered and shows no sign of feather loss

Mine usually start laying a week or two after they finish being broody.
