They will know if they have myco or any other respiratory infection in their flock.  Did your friend buy their hens before or after you ?

The breeder incidentally is listed on this website, and this is where we got the details from when we started looking.

Sorry I think I overlapped with your reply. They bought theirs approx 6 months after us.

We don't recommend any of the breeders on our list it's just a list of breeders. It is always up to any purchaser to be very careful to check out conditions, biosecurity and general health of ALL the stock when they go to buy birds.  Even then it's not possible to guarantee that the birds you buy are healthy.

... but I thought that you said

The breeder said she was just upset at the move.

This suggests you have bought her recently rather than 6 months ago.

No I realise that, and I wish I had taken more time and looked at more places, but you know what it's like - you get really excited and don't want to wait!

With more experience behind us now, I think the standards may not have been as good as they could have been. It wasn't until we bought our next 3 from a different breeder we realised how much better and cleaner it seemed. The owner also showed a lot more interest in us and spent more time giving us advice and showing us around.

I just wondered whether you ever took breeders names off the website if you thought they weren't up-to-standard.

Having said that I wouldn't have been without our girls and everything in life is a learning process!

I will talk to the vet about it more.

If you bought them 2 years ago the myco infection they have now is probably noting to do with the original breeder.

I'm now quite confused, has it come in with the new birds, have you recently bought them.

We have had the newer birds for almost 18 months. So is it not possible that she has had it 2 years and only just displayed any symptoms? Where else could she have caught it?

She could have got it from wild birds too.

Thanks for all your help. I have loads of new information now. I will keep you posted with what the vet says later this week if I can get to see someone who knows about chickens.

Jacky.

I think we have found a vet who knows about chickens. I just have 2 more questions about Myco. Does it affect humans? (ie can they catch it, or carry it?) and will it affect the egg laying of the hen?

Thanks very much.
Jacky.

No (they can physically carry it from infected birds on their feet, hands, cloths etc.  Life outside the birds is very short though)

and will it affect the egg laying of the hen'

Egg production may be a little lower but you probably won't notice unless they are unwell again.

Definitely don't hatch any of their eggs.
