My allotment is on a brand new site just opened this year, and although I have my plan in place for the middle of the plot I'm at a loss as to what to put around the borders.

Some people have put fencing and others low trellis' around their borders but I fancied an evergreen plant.

someone on our plot has a willow fence but i would think it would take a lot of pruning to avoid shading any areas

I inherited a lavender hedge on one side and a mixed evergreen hedge to make an L-shape on the windy side...............nothing on the other side :blink:

Plot came with variations on privet, hawthorn, ivy and hawthorn and various oddities which have been grown over what were random patched netting fences long ago. Hard work to cut but worth it for the defence from prying eyses.

Whatever you put in - consider future plot holders though. Not everyone has the facility to deal with monster hedges.

I have 6 lavender plants at home so if I can get some more from them then perhaps the lavender border could be a goer.......
it's very very open and windy on my lottie so maybe a solid side (or 2) would be needed aswell,

I've read somewhere that solid barriers aren't the best for windbreaks, creates turbulence behind them or something.  :blink:  I'm going down the lavender / gooseberry route....

I got my allotment last august, and planted a whole row of lavender along one edge, they were small plug plants i sent away for, this year i have a lovely hedge, full of flowers and the bees flock around it, definatley recommend lavender.

I've been trying to get a hedge of lavender going in one of my borders for years now. I keep planting them and they just keep dying. I guess they don't like my clay soil or something.

id have holly as a boarder evergreen and nice to take cuttings for Christmas decorations.

but the holly roots would grow a long way into your veg beds, and take nutrients and water away from the veg.
But lovely if you have loads of space and can give the trees the room they deserve
