Can chickens get a chill?
« on: August 27, 2010, 10:45 »
Hello all,

I'm looking after my friends chickens while she's away, and Wednesday noticed that their rooting roof leaked. I fixed it, and this morning it was dry in there, but one of the chickens this morning doesn't seem right. I put them back in their coop so that they would be dry today, but what happens if she has a chill? She stood outside and was closing her eyes. When I put her in, she started preening. Should I do any more?
Thanks.

I'm not sure what a "chill" is.

They can get wet and cold which can lower their resistance to diseases but it's not really cold this time of year compared to winter.

Keep an eye on the poorly chicken and ask again if she doesn't improve.  Hens do have a snooze during the day sometimes so she might be fine.
