Dead Chicken, help please
« on: August 22, 2010, 18:26 »
Wonder if anyone can help me.
I have 10 chickens, they were fine this morning. Just been down to the allotment and have found 1 of them dead with what looks like its intestines hanging out.
The others look okay.
Red mite isn't a problem, they have regular tonic and a regular spraying of DE.
They are around 2-3years old.
Egg production is good (i got 10 last Thursday).
Any ideas if i need to look out for anything?
Many thanks,
John.

Is everything hanging out of her vent? If so then it sounds like she has either had a prolapse or an egg break on its way out and the other hens will have started to peck at this. When blood is drawn then this will have become a frenzy and she will have just let the others do this to her (no idea why they just give up without a fight maybe it's just to get it over and done with  :(). If the innards are hanging out elsewhere then it sounds like you have had an intruder - check for teeth marks around the neck.
Staffies are softer than you think.
