broken fertilised egg
« on: August 15, 2010, 19:38 »
My broody has been sat on bantam eggs for a little over two weeks. They are due to hatch on Thursday, when I lifted her this evening there was a broken one with a tiny chick inside still alive! I dont think it was hatching because it was still in its sac with quite a lot of yolk.  I removed the egg and the little chick was dead within a couple of minutes :( Did I do wrong? Should I have just left it? This is mums first hatching, so its all new to her and me.... will she break the others? I know thats a silly question, but I didnt realise I would be soo upset and fearful for the little ones left behind! Any replies gratefully recieved.....

if it was broken then removing it was best, if it had just got a little crack then I would have maybe left it.
Staffies are softer than you think.

ty Joyful, it was definitely broken, do you think she may break some more? Why would she have broken it? Is it because she's a first time mum?

No telling if she will break any more or not. If they are due on Thursday I would now just move the feed and water close to her and leave her be, she may be clumsy but just let her get herself off the eggs now if she wants to  :)
