what do you do about rust on leeks?

I've just noticed it today. (I'm prepared to spray - the leeks were one of the first things I sowed and I really want to keep them!)
trying to be organic...

nothing unless the leek dies, normally it wont affect the bit you eat only the leaves you dont. I have it on mine at the mo but it isnt that bad yet.
Punk isn't dead...it's underground where it belongs. If it comes to the surface it's no longer punk...it's Green Day!

Are they planted out and reasonably established?

If so, snip out the affected parts .. rust usually starts towards the top of a leaf so take out the top half of the leaf or whatever .. the whole leaf if necessary (assuming that there are other leaves on the plant).

This will encourage more leaves to grow and in fact helps to produce thicker stems eventually. Periodically reducing the length of leaves up to the end of September (say) is an old piece of gardening advice (rust or no rust) but I am not sure that many people follow it today.

I take the same approach for tackling leek moth (though we need some heat before we have to worry about them this year) .. the maggot tunnels down the leaf towards the base so take the leaf out just below the level of the tunnel marks.

If you really want to spray then use bordeaux mixture (copper fungicide) but this should be a last resort on leeks.

I think just leave them, spraying won`t help much as it is these warm, wet conditions encouraging the rust.

Agreed, just peel off the dodgy leaves when you harvest.
