Chick walking on Elbows
« on: August 02, 2010, 22:30 »
Hi,

Another question...sorry

Basically, I have a little chick with funky legs, it walks on its elbows!

I have tied its legs together with wool and in a day its made a slight difference...

is there anything else I can do for it to encourage it to put weight on its feet....apart from cull it please...I want to give it a chance at life
When the wolf lays with the lamb, I fear for us all

Give it a couple of days.  some times it takes a while for them to get the hang of walking properly if thye have splay leg.

However if there is no change in a couple of days sometimes it is kindest to cull...One of the downsides to hatching.

Theres been a slight change to his walking. he is walking more on his legs now. Do they struggle with their centre of gravity if they have had splayed leg? I don't know too much about it, I just did what my uncle told me :/

*sigh* I know...I just can't when they have a chance you know :)

But you MUST measure "chance" against current suffering and distress.

If the chick is happy and bright, eating and drinking then OK, but if he is listless, staying in one place, sleepy all the time, or cheeping all the time, then you have to weigh up.

Believe me it is easier to cull at a couple of days old, than it is at a couple of weeks.

one of mine has splayed legs and someone showed me that you can cut a plaster (band aid) in half length ways and put it around the legs so that the non sticky bit is in the middle. (pretty much the same effect as the wool but may be more secure) ive tried it with mine and holding its own so far.
they sent me a link which shows you, i will try to work out how to forward it!
good luck ::)

Thank you, I have done the plaster thing and it is working, he is starting to walk on his feet. He just needs to learn to lift his head off the ground when he walks :)

Don't worry, If he is suffering then I will immediatly cull. At the moment he is eating and drinking and looks a bright and healthy little chick. He cheeps alot but I think thats more because he is not in the pen with the others (he is right next to them and can see them). As soon as you put a chick in with him he snuggles up to them :)

Don't worry, I am trained in animals. :). I know how to euthanise them and I can do it, I just don't like to do it with a problem like splayed leg cos you can fix it :). I have given it a week, if its not better by a week from hatching, or if it hasn't made significant progress, then I will cull him.

I had to cull the chick :(

It got better but in the end he just gave up and it was the kindest thing

My sister hasn't stopped crying though...I feel like a monster :(

hello, so sorry to hear your sad news, my 2 little splash couchins both where born with it, 1 is ok and the other is limping but still gets to the food and water ok and seems happy, he did have a sore on his elbow but put some f10 cream on it and it looks better but he/she still walks with a limp which i can live with, (if she gets picked on by the others when she goes to the allotment she will be getting her own pen with a few small girls to keep her company)..
once again sorry to here your news
