Chilli Peppers
« on: July 22, 2010, 08:46 »
I'm growing what I thought were Cayenne Peppers (that's what it said on the seed packet  :))
All my plants are growing and fruiting well on window bottoms indoors.
I've likened some of them to courgettes: you can almost watch them grow.

There's plenty of good sized fruits, up to 20, on each plant.
Now the bit I don't understand;
All the fruits are dark green with the exception of one of the lowest, and newest, fruit on each plant. That one starts off and continues to grow bright orange.
What is the likely cause of this?

My first impression?

They arent Cayenne! The ones I grew were much longer and thinner right from the off. Maybe there's been a mix up in seeds (happened to me with toms several times), or they were inadvertently cross pollinated

Yes, Cayenne are the long pointy ones. As for this colouration, don't think it is a problem....

I am growning both Cayenne and Jalapeno and yours look more like my Jalapeno then Cayenne. You are getting a much better crop than me - I got about 12 Jalapeno off 2 plants!

. . . . . . They arent Cayenne!  . . . .

 :D
That's why I made my opening remark:

Bigben is probably correct. They do look very much like Jalapeno.
If I'm right that may explain the orange fruit because, I believe, they often start off in a variety of colours.

I'm sure that someone will educate me if I am incorrect.  :)

What brand of seeds are they WW?

(You may remember my topic about sweet peppers from Wilcos which were nothing like the illustation on the packet; as an update to this I gave 2 spare plants to a neighbour - one has tapering yellow peppers just like mine, the other actually looks like they are supposed to, so a pretty mixed bag (packet!) by the looks of it!)  :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Sorry, I haven't a clue.
I used, or gave away, all of the seeds and then composted the packet.

I'm not too bothered.
They taste very good.

I've also got other varieties growing . . . . . so I've perhaps got some more surprises due later in the year.  :)

I've got a few Cayenne plants on the go too, but they look like yours!  Maybe a mass-seed mixup somewhere.  Cant remember where I got my seeds from (maybe T&M, or organic catalogue).  No rogue orange ones, but they are going great guns - big crop already ripening.

Hi
I have grown Cheyenne a few times and they look very like your pictures.
It is easy to confuse the two on reading the names.

bappelbe, you are probably 100% correct.
That looks exactly like my plants.

I probably had a senior moment and was not wearing my eyeglasses, or had been at the bottle, when I sowed the seed.

Cheyenne / cayenne both look the same.

Explains a lot.
Incidentally, all my early fruit was dark green and has stayed that way. Now, all the fruit is starting off, and continuing to grow, orange.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
