Is it too early to tell?
« on: July 15, 2010, 22:53 »
Hi,

Olive's chicks are now 3 weeks old and do not look anywhere near as cute as they did when they were a day old. They have most of their feathers but look very ragged around their necks. Some feathers look a little spikier than others on the back of the neck, but generally their combs seem to be a similar size. Most will bounce up and down against each others chests at various times (so funny to watch this ), but as yet I have no idea which are boys or girls. Am I getting a little impatient, or is there a way to get some indication of which may be cockerels?

It can depend on the breed but usually you know when they crow! Not for a few weeks yet ;) :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Mine are at the same stage  :). It is funny when they bang chests   .
I don't know which sex they are either, so will keep an eye on this topic to see if someone suggests a way you can tell at this stage  :).

Experts can check at day old but it is not recommended for hobbyists as it is a skill if done incorrectly will cause discomfort/damage
