calabrese broccoli

 My broccoli has started to sprout heads and shot towards the sky at an alarming rate, but they are very small and are already starting to show signs of flowering. Is this normal. Will the heads get any larger once they have flowered.

I pick them young before they start to loosen.  As kermit said the side shoots are wonderful right up until late autumn.
