My hens are really noisy from 4am! I din't think hens were just cocks. I know it's bad but i now leave gate open so they can get into garden so i don't have to get up to them.

Mine are silent until I let them our of their coop at about 7.30a.m.

If it's dark in their house they will keep quiet.

well they don't like their coop so live in greenhouse, i've tried putting them in the coop everynight but they are not happy at all!

wow do they not get too hot in the greenhouse in this weather?

well they can always get out and have a wooden coop as well. They have been fine, I've had them a year and they have laid an egg each every day all through winter!

Have you checked their coop for red mite ?

I would think they will shout in a greenhouse as soon as the sun gets up.

I must stick my nose in and say that I really wouldnt endorse keeping chooks in a greenhouse. They CAN be a bit too stupid to know what is best for them...thats YOUR job. MAKE them go to bed in the appropriate coop.  The extremes of temperature behind glass are really bad for them. If they are snuggley in their wooden coop, it will be dark so they will  sleep quietly until you let them out.

Also,kept safely in the coop will protect them from predators too.

I agree some hens are just noisey i even blacked out the window in their shed to try and keep the noise down worked for 2 days.   I have 9 hens and its only 2 speckled sussex crosses that make all the noise! 
Once they are out at 6am and ive given them their breakfast they are quiet untill ofcourse they lay their eggs!

Caralou bought me 2 of her girls that were supposed to be noisy but since they have been with me they are quieter than a church mouse - not a peep from them at all
