I have decided to dig out my asparagus crowns because we don't eat it. When is the best time to do it so that i can let other plot holders have them.?

I just moved some not because it was the best time but because they were in the way, they have carried on as if nothing happened

The fern is just forming so wondered if the best time to move them was when we cut the fern in the spring or now.

as they sell them in late spring I would guess the winter is the best time but as doubledug says, if you move them now with plenty of soil and the receivers get them planted quick they should be ok...

Asparagus is usually planted "for life" which could mean 20 or more years, so moving mature plants could hardly be recommended unless absolutely necessary.

Assuming yours are mature plants the roots will have spread far and wide so will be very difficult to dig out intact; you will just have to do your best.

Generally moving established plants when they are actively growing is not a good idea; my guess, and it's only a guess, would be that early spring before they start growing again and when the soil is hopefully not frozen would be the best time.
