Triffid Tomato
« on: June 29, 2010, 08:50 »
I've been regularly pinching out my tomatoes and staking.  I have three growbags each with three plants, all Gardeners Delight except one Sungold.  All of a sudden a huge branch from the bottom of the sungold has grown right out and I'm really not quite sure what to do with it.  It would be difficult, but should I stake it separately, or do I let it hang on the ground?  As a novice, I think these tomato plants grow much bigger than I expected them to!

I don't need telling twice to prune! :D  It has actually got flowers on it quite near to the base, so I've cut off everything else except the flowers.  Is this ok?

Yes they may be okay.  It wont hurt the main plant.

I've grown Sungold for a few years now and theydo suddenly spurt out suckers (or whatever they're called) They are also leggy plants and grow quite tall, but have lovely long trusses of tomatoes. :)

Oh good, I'm really looking forward to seeing them.  Funny really, I've got 20 tomato plants and I don't like raw tomatoes!  Looking forward to cooking with them all tho!

If you don't like raw toms have a look on the jam and preserving section for the sun dried tomato process.
