Slug Nematodes haven't done anything.
« on: June 22, 2010, 21:51 »
I treated my small garden in May with nematodes and again 6 weeks later (2 weeks ago). I did it while we had a few days of rain.

I have a small table top raised bed which I have just found tiny new baby slugs all over my lettuce. I have bags growing potatos with slugs sitting in the bottom and also evidence of them eating other veg in the other beds. ALL these areas were treated with a very good amount.

Why are there still a lot of slugs, especially tiny ones ? Surely in a small container they would have gone through pretty thorough.

Why have you still got slugs?

Because an awful lot of 'organic' pest control doesn't actually work.

The only thing I've found that gives full control is metaldehyde but it's nasty stuff and I use it sparingly. I don't mind a few slugs but if I get an infestation I reach for the pellets.

Where do tiny slugs come from ?

Its difficult to pick them out as they are so small. I need to place some beer traps which does work.

I am surprised nobody else has answered this post as nematodes are popular.

I am surprised as I used them for the last few years and they work wonders for me. I always water them on 1st thing (6-7am)

Out of tiny slug eggs I'm afraid, hubballi.

Beer traps sound a good idea, or you could maybe try half orange skins upside down as these seem to collect loads too.

Stick with it and you will win the war of the slugs eventually - -- every dead slug is one not laying eggs for the next generation  :D :D
Wisdom is knowing what to ignore - be comfortable in your own skin.

Because your average small green space has hundreds of thousands of slugs and slug eggs in it! Nematodes will attack them and reduce numbers somewhat but there will always be more hatching out, breeding and searching for food. One school of thought suggests we are wasting our time trying to control them as there are so many it's like trying to stop the tide coming in. I still use blue pellets tho  :)
