Electric hen and single chick
« on: June 21, 2010, 05:56 »
My first chick came yesterday, 2/3 days early  and it's very vocal but not so strong on it's feet.

It came out from the warm overnight and was nearly dead this morning.  I've put it back under and it seems to be picking up.

Should I just leave it?  At what point should I try and get it to drink?

Whew - looking much stronger now.

I think I should have left it in the incubator last night but I was worried about the other eggs and not having the non-slip mat in - arrives tomorrow.

Nothing else hatched so guess this one just decided to come early.

Glad the little fella is starting to pick up.  It's strange that he would come out from the heat.  Mine are under the EH almost constantly with only the odd bimble for food and water (water at one side of the brooder, food at the other to encourage them to walk around!)

I would show them where the food and water is once they are about 24h old.  Put the chick next the the water and make a pecking motion with your finger in the water (same with the food)  I found this much easier and less stressful for the chick than to force their beaks into the water and food.

Thanks Casey.

I should have known I would get an awkward one - like mother like daughter as they say - although I'm guessing he's a boy - well we girls would have more sense wouln't we. ::)

Must get a pic of my first born - next step will be guess the sex. ;)

They're best left in the incubator for 24 hours after hatching. If your non-slip mat has not arrived yet use kitchen roll - easy to clear up and replace as well! :)

Good luck :)
