Marking eggs and chicks
« on: June 21, 2010, 08:29 »
Does a marker pen have to be a particular type to write on eggs or do breeders use any old marker?

Also does anyone have any ideas for colour marking chicks till they are a bit bigger for leg rings?  I wondered about a bit of red food dye with a paintbrush?

I just use a pencil.  It won't leach through the shell.

For marking chicks, I think people use coloured cable ties or freezer bag twists (apparantly you can get them in colours on ebay) until they are big enough for  leg rings.

You have to be careful though and check to make sure thy aren't too small very frequently (which is why the tie twists are probably a better option).

Casey I'm guessing you are younger then me - I can just about see pencil markings with my reading glasses on and I am all thumbs for cable ties.  Crikey sometimes I feel I am showing my age - 2 years to the big 60.

All my eggs off other people are written in felt tip of some sort - now THAT I can see  :D

LOL!  OK, I'm a bit younger than you ;)

I guess a water based marker, rather than an alcohol based one then!

Freezer ties might still be the way to go for marking though - easier to get off than cable ties... but still fiddly when you are dealing with a wriggling chick

I bought some no 2 leg rings supposed to be for day olds 6.4mm but not arrived yet.

Those little legs look very delicate though.

Try wing tags, they're on for life.

how old do they have to be for wing tags - does it need a special gadget?

Chicks can be wing tagged at a day old. Some can be done by hand others use an implement similar to pliers.

I don't see why you can't use food dyes. You may have to top it up as I don't know whether or not it would wear off, just until they are large enough for leg rings. Ijust wonder if the freezer/cable ties might be a bit 'sharp'! ???
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
