Can eggs be sold at gate as free-range?
« on: June 20, 2010, 22:07 »
Having read the articles on the site about selling at the gate, it says to avoid the term "free-range" as it is a legal term.  I was wondering what the criteria were for free-range apart from the obvious.

Also someone told me that I couldn't put a specific price sign up and that it had to be a "suggested donation". Has anyone else heard of this?

Any thoughts anyone?

I don't know what the official line is, but I took my free range eggs for sale down last year as my chicken do not totally free range.  They have runs so are not officially free range.  I think their 'range' has to have a certain percentage of greenery, which mine don't as they ate it all!

My sign says 'fresh laid eggs from our own hens', and I do have the price on the sign, I've never been told otherwise.  If you just ask for donations, people will be leaving 50p!

Just found these bits of info!

Thanks for the speedy clarification, Grannie Annie.

I hadn't heard about this donation business before but someone I was speaking to at the weekend was adamant about it BUT she doesn't sell eggs.  I've heard of having to do it at village get-togethers when they're selling wine/beer but they give a suggested donation which most people adhere to.

I agree with you that if it's a donation then people may not leave the correct amount.

There are altogether too many bleep bleep rules and regulations.

We used to be the local village shop and Post Office and I remember one visit from the authorities that resulted in us having to date the eggs on 30x trays but the loose sausages we didn't need to date.  Go figure!!!!

They also made us change to KG and grams.  When I said most of our customers were older and didn't want it, they told me I could put both - then came back the week after to complain that my KG price wasn't bigger than my LB price.
 :tongue2:

I put "garden Range" on mine  :D.

As i understood it, you can get away from any legalities by saying that the money you make simply goes to the upkeep of the birds.

I sell mine with labels on the boxes which state - organically fed free range chickens eggs and anybody who knows where I live can see just how free range they are as they are often either in the trees or wandering off down the bridleway and in the fields. I don't sell from home but do sell them to friends for a set donation to cover their feed.

isn't there also some regulation about egg boxes? You as the seller are not allowed to use second hand boxes although the buyer can bring along a used box for their eggs.

oh and have just been on the DEFRA website and its publication states clearly that eggs can be sold at 'farm gate' and at farmers markets

Quote

Are farm gate/door-to-door sales of eggs from unregistered producers permitted?
Yes - producers with fewer than 50 birds are not required to be registered with Animal Health EMI nor with the Great Britain Poultry Register and do not need to mark their eggs with a producer code. They can sell these at their farm gate or locally door-to-door in the region of production. They may also sell them direct to consumers at a local public market in which case they must show their name and address and provide consumer advice to keep eggs chilled after purchase along with a best before date (maximum 28 days from lay) for the eggs. (section 4b of the EMR1 leaflet refers).

I've got free range hens/duck eggs on my sign, which they do (my place looks like the somme),registered with defra & the local council (ive got vile neighbours on one side so i have to make sure i do everything right). Already had the enviro health called round by horrible neighbours & passed ok. My customers bring their own boxes alot of the times, but i always have others. I label them with my name, address, telephone number, defra number, "free range garden hen/duck eggs". Best before date (28 days from laying date) & keep cool.

Printed off on the computer & just stuck on the box.
